So what about McCain???
I will admit, one week ago when a pollster called my house to ask who I would vote for, I paused a long pause, not because I was deciding between McCain and Obama, but because I just could not get excited about saying, "McCain" even though I frequently vote rebublican because I believe less government is better for everyone. And then they would ask, "How likely are you to vote for McCain, very likely, somewhat likely, maybe, probably not?" And I had no clue what to say. I just completely lacked enthusiasm about this candidate. I viewed him as nothing more than a professional politician who just said what he thought we all wanted to hear. But this convention has really fired me up. I now have a completely different view of John McCain. I truly believe he is a man of his word, who lives, eats, breathes, sleeps patriotism. He has got to have more love and affection for the USA than anyone I've ever come across. Truly. I believe he really is a maverick like he claims to be and I love mavericks. (Especially the Dallas Mavericks...ba da bing!) What he went through for 5 years as a POW and how he could have been released if he would have just denounced his country, but he refused, I love that! I love it that he had the guts to pick Palin as his running mate. I'm feeling much better about this election. I may just have to run right out and get me a McCain/Palin sign for the yard now.
Did any of you watch the convention tonight and if so, did John McCain's love of country come across as loud and clear to you as it did to me? Are any of you fence riders climbing over the fence tonight and if so, to which side?

First I have to say I love the comment about schools working for the students and parents! Even though we homeschool - I loved hearing that because I don't know if we'll always be able to homeschool!
McCain certainly does love our country, that was evident. I just have this hiccup about his age. And I know that's being prejudice - but that's something I can't get past. He's definitely not a smooth speaker - but I believe his actions and character speak above the honey others want to weave to avoid the fact that they aren't doing anything.
I like Palin as his running mate especially so because she's everything he's not - she's younger, she's a woman, she's a good speaker ... it seems she makes up for what he lacks. And who knew about Cindy McCain - wow - I was impressed, I thought she was a silver spoon sucker!
As far as the other comment on your previous post, of "family is more important than the presidency" - I think Palin is protecting her children the best way she can by running for office!

I love him too. I admire his endurance (as a P.O.W.) and FIGHT for our country's safety. People remarked about Palin's 5 children...McCain has 7, yowza. Look at his family's acomplishments and history of service to our country, look at how Cindy was involved in Mother Theresa's orphanage and brought a baby home. About his age...his mom is 96 and look at her. I bet he has good genes and I think he'll be fine for the next 8 years. I just feel he is much stronger than Obama.
Okay... I am on FIRE. I felt much the same way you did, Heather... but I really really pay attention. I mean, I got a political science degree and I really get into the news and coverage of all the candidates, but I have just never felt crazy about McCain until last night. The following is the conclusion to his speech last night... it is his CALL OF ACTION. And it is everything that I believe that America needs to hear right now. YAY! I am getting me a sign, too. I wish I could go work for him.
I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency, for its faith in the wisdom, justice, and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again; I wasn't my own man anymore; I was my country's. I'm not running for president because I think I'm blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save our country in its hour of need. My country saved me. My country saved me, and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her for as long as I draw breath, so help me God. My friends, if you find faults with our country, make it a better one. If you're disappointed with the mistakes of government, join its ranks and work to correct them. Enlist... Enlist in our Armed Forces. Become a teacher. Enter the ministry. Run for public office. Feed a hungry child. Teach an -- an illiterate adult to read. Comfort the afflicted. Defend the rights of the oppressed. Our country will be the better, and you will be the happier, because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself. LOVED the ending of his speech. McCain rocked last night! I love that old man! He has served our country his ENTIRE adult life. That says something!
I love McCain! Not just because Obama's policies scare me but because I know McCain has the ability to do what is needed to protect America. If we are not tough with our enemies, our kids won't know what it is like to be safe on a bus, train, plane or mall.
McCain understands that America is great. He doesn't have a paster who curses America and he would never defend anyone who did.
I think the choice of Palin really cemented in me that he would make a great leader.
